LeaderShape 2013
During Winter Break of 2013, I participated in The LeaderShape Institute, the name of which I realized is very appropriate given everything that happened in those six days. Throughout the six days, us students worked to form our own ideas of what we believe a leader to be, what the characteristics of a good leader are, and how we could use this understanding to make an impact on issues we found important. The overreaching purpose of it was to get people to realize their own potential and help them apply this potential to issues they were passionate about, all in the hopes of making the world a better place.
Going in, I really did not know what to expect from the LeaderShape Institute. I had heard that it was life changing, but the reasons it was described as such were unknown to me. After going through the Institute, I can honestly say that it was much more meaningful than I could have ever imagined. One of the most influential days of LeaderShape to me came the very first day. The First day of LeaderShape was dubbed “The Value of One, the Power of All.” This day was dedicated to realizing the importance of teamwork: Although by yourself you may be powerful, with people behind you sharing similar goals and visions, you can be unstoppable. I have always believed in my own individual power and ability to do what I put my mind to. The activities done this day of LeaderShape showed me that while I may have success doing things by myself, others surrounding me can lead to success beyond anything I could do myself. The remaining five days were just as influential to my growth as this first day as they culminated into what we at LeaderShape dubbed, “Our Vision.”
Through everything done at LeaderShape, I realized that my passion and vocation lies around helping those less fortunate than myself. I had always know in the back of my head that that sort of work was what I enjoyed but during LeaderShape, all those experiences were brought together into something tangible and something that I can be cognizant about.
